Malta Philharmonic Orchestra

As Malta’s only professional orchestra, the MPO is in high demand, performing in over 70 concerts every year, including symphonic concerts, opera productions in Malta and Gozo, community outreach and educational programmes as well as various concerts of a lighter nature. Its busy schedule notwithstanding, the MPO has increasingly ventured beyond Malta’s shores in recent years, having undertaken its first overseas tour back in 2001. Since then, it has collaborated with numerous orchestras and opera companies and performed in leading venues across the globe, including in China, Italy, Germany, Austria and Belgium.

Over the years, the orchestra has performed with many renowned artists including Karl Jenkins, Joseph Calleja, Andrea Bocelli and Bryn Terfel, acclaimed conductors such as Michalis Economou, Peter Stark, Jean-Marc Burfin, Wayne Marshall and Philip Walsh, as well as pop stars including Claudio Baglioni, Suzanne Vega, Michael Bolton and Anastacia.

The MPO also has a number of recordings to its name. Its CDs include a project with international record label Naxos featuring works by Maltese composer Charles Camilleri and two CD series published by Cameo Classics, Music of the 19th Century Jewish German Composers and British Composers Premiere Collections. A CD featuring the music of Polish composer Alexandre Tansman with the CPO Label was released in 2018.

The MPO is a keen exponent of Maltese composers, regularly performing their works in Malta and abroad and premièring – as well as commissioning – new compositions.

It is also responsible for the orchestral training and professional development of the next generation of Maltese musicians, through the MPO Academy and the Malta Youth Orchestra, which itself regularly gives concerts across Malta. At the same time, it is actively involved in organising educational programmes for children, through workshops and special performances.

While it celebrates 50 years of music, the MPO remains intent on delivering quality orchestral music to the Maltese islands, all the time continuing to promote Malta’s musical heritage overseas.

MARCELLINE AGIUS, Violin
NADIA DEBONO, Viola
FRANK CAMILLERI, Cello

Ernő Dohnányi: Serenade in C Major for String Trio, Op. 10

Dohnányi’s Serenade was composed in 1902, musically following on Mozart’s and Beethoven’s oeuvres. After the short initial march, the work alternates virtuosic passages for the three instruments, as in the mercurial scherzo, with melodic sections such as in the Romanza and the Tema con Variazioni, the latter being the longest and most complex movement. The trio ends with a lively rondo, a direct influence from the Viennese Classical works.

MARIA CONRAD, Violin
GISÈLE GRIMA, Piano

Ludwig van Beethoven: 1st Movement from Violin Sonata No. 9, Op. 47, “Kreutzer Sonata”

Composed in 1803, this sonata, which inspired Tolstoy to write a novel bearing the same title, was dedicated to the French violinist Kreutzer who ironically found this music too complex and never performed it himself. The cadenza-style entrance on the violin and the slow semitone motif are the basis for the entire first movement, bursting out dramatically at the Presto section in a relentless drive of fiery energy between the two instruments.

Alberto Ginastera: Duo for Flute and Oboe, Op. 13
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Voi Che Sapete from Le Nozze di Figaro
Alex Vella Gregory: 4th and 5th Movements from Awwissu

MPO Principal players perform an eclectic programme featuring Ginastera’s Duo for flute and oboe, defined as inspiring listeners to “believe in the New World”.

Mozart’s Voi Che Sapete is a testament to the love of a young man to all women, presenting Cherubino’s innocent affections on the cusp of manhood. The final two movements in Awwissu, by Alex Vella Gregory, are typical of the composer’s mastery of miniature: compact and elegant, yet evocative and powerful.

Johann Sebastian Bach (trans. G. Cincievski): Goldberg Variations

MPO Principals Marcelline Agius, Nadia Debono and Gjorgi Cincievski perform Bach’s masterpiece, named after Johann Gottlieb Goldberg, who might have been the first performer. Commissioned by Count Kaiserling to “lightly cheer him up during his sleepless nights”, the work – the most extensive clavier composition during the Baroque period – is considered as a synthesis of the era’s variation form.

This transcription has been hailed as an “astonishing successful effort that will leave mark in the world music history”.
